Used to remove ferric chloride from a dissolved sample of a ferrous alloy. Ether is boiled in an Erlenmeyer flask, and the condensed vapors fall through the funnel, escaping into the bottom of the extractor. Next, the drops rise to the surface of the solution in the extractor and spill over into the flask, as they are saturated with ferris chloride. The spiral enhances dispersion of ether in the solution. For the full procedure see an article by Ashley, S.E.Q., and W.M. Murray, Jr., Ind. and Eng. Chem., Anal. Ed., 10, 7, pp. 367–368 (1938).
